What To Do When You Find A Water Leak At Home

A visible drip, damp patch or unexpected water around a fixture is worth attention. Some leaks are obvious; others develop slowly behind a wall, under a vanity or around a hot-water system. The important thing is to keep the response practical and safe.

START WITH SAFETY AND THE LOCATION

Take note of where the water is coming from and whether it is near any electrical equipment. Do not touch wiring, power points or appliances affected by water. If there is an immediate electrical or safety concern, keep clear and use the appropriate emergency service advice.

REDUCE FURTHER WATER LOSS IF YOU CAN DO SO SAFELY

Avoid using the affected tap, toilet, appliance or area. If you know where the relevant isolation valve is and it is safe to access, isolating the water supply may help reduce further loss. If you are unsure, do not force a valve or attempt to dismantle plumbing.

MAKE A FEW USEFUL NOTES

Is the water running continuously or only when a fixture is used? Is it hot or cold? Has the problem followed recent work, a pressure change or a change in your water use? A photo of the visible area can help when it is safe to take one.

WHY FINDING THE SOURCE MATTERS

A leak may come from a fixture, connection, pipe, water service or hot-water system. The visible water is not always the source, so a proper assessment looks at the cause before recommending a repair.
